Since 2020, the New Zealand Government has focused on achieving greater diversity in their suppliers, requiring all government agencies to allocate a minimum of 5% of their contracts to Māori businesses. These Māori businesses will play a vital role in helping lift Māori whānau (family) aspirations and dreams for a better life, while reinforcing New Zealand’s economic security.

As the Government’s principal policy advisor on Māori wellbeing and development, this presented Te Puni Kōkiri with a transformational opportunity to support the overall capabilities of Māori businesses, and to help them become procurement ready.

Te Puni Kōkiri engaged KPMG in New Zealand because of our deep expertise in Government and Te Ao Māori (the Māori world view), and our digital services and Microsoft capabilities. We worked closely with Te Puni Kōkiri to create a tailored business assessment and grant management solution. The solution’s name was decided upon by Te Puni Kōkiri as “Te Tomokanga” – a gateway to transforming, uplifting and creating better outcomes for all.

Te Tomokanga has been developed using KPMG Powered Grants with Microsoft Business Applications using Microsoft Power Platform. It is used to assist Te Puni Kōkiri Regional Advisors and decision makers with assessing the needs of Māori businesses, and to provide the support and funding required to uplift their capabilities and enable them to engage in the complex government procurement environment.

With KPMG professionals’ expertise and the Microsoft Business Applications suite of tools, Te Puni Kōkiri was able to transform their previously manual, time and labour-intensive processes into a fit-for-purpose digital solution that allows them to focus on the work that matters – work that helps create better outcomes for Aotearoa New Zealand.
