Helping clients meet their business challenges begins with an in-depth understanding of the industries in which they work. That’s why KPMG LLP established its industry-driven structure. Riding out the downtrend: Q2’24 M&A trends in financial services

2024 marks a dynamic rebound in financial services, fueled by strategic adjustments and significant policy influences.

Mergers & Acquisitions: Value is hiding in every corner of complex deals

Financial services M&A is navigating through a period of anticipation and strategic recalibration in 2024, as the industry braces for the outcomes of the upcoming general election and adapts to evolving macroeconomic signals. Industry players are cautiously optimizing their portfolios, awaiting clearer signals on interest rates and inflation trends.

Here are some key trends and insights from the second quarter:

  • The banking subsector is witnessing a strategic re-evaluation, with 105 deals concluded in Q2, reflecting an 11.0 percent decrease from Q1 2024. Yet, the year-to-date analysis highlights a robust increase in value, influenced significantly by large-scale transactions, underscoring the sector's potential for transformative deals.
  • Capital markets experienced a stagnant period, with 775 deals in Q2 2024, only a marginal 0.6 percent increase from the previous quarter. This underscores the cautious stance of private equity and other institutional investors amid fluctuating interest rates.
  • The insurance sector has seen a dynamic shift with 266 deals in Q2 2024, a 13.7 percent rise from Q1. This was driven largely by strategic acquisitions and the convergence of insurance with asset management, despite a 45.1 percent decrease in value from the same quarter.
  • The commercial real estate (CRE) sector faces a critical challenge with $1.1 trillion in loans nearing maturity amid high interest rates. This sets the stage for potential distress and strategic opportunities in property repositioning and acquisitions, signaling a transformative period for the CRE market.

Through 2024, we expect a strategic resurgence in M&A activities, with firms placing a premium on innovation, strategic alliances, operational efficiency, and market expansion to thrive in a gradually stabilizing economic environment.
