KPMG Global tech report 2026: Energy, Natural Resources and Chemicals

Discover how energy leaders are shaping the Intelligence Age through AI and emerging technologies

Continuing on the journey of smart technology transformation

As the energy sector stands on the verge of an AI‑enabled Intelligence Age, this report explores how leaders are integrating technology more deeply into operations to succeed in a fast‑moving and unpredictable environment. While AI and cybersecurity remain top priorities, the research highlights how energy organizations are also assessing and investing in a broader range of emerging technologies – XaaS, edge computing, digital twins and quantum – balancing current adoption with future ambition.

Drawing on insights from over 250 energy leaders, the report examines where targeted digital initiatives, such as production optimization, predictive maintenance, and integrated asset management, are already delivering measurable value. It also seeks to address the challenges of scaling beyond pilots, outlining how clear strategy, strong governance, and a human‑centric approach are critical to unlocking sustained performance and long‑term returns.

Key findings from our research

One in five ENRC organizations surveyed have indicated that they are achieving technology ROI in excess of 200%

Just 29% of ENRC respondent businesses are still in AI piloting phases – by next year that will fall to only 2%

96% of energy leaders surveyed believe that managing AI agents will become a key workforce skill within the next five years

Governance is critical: nearly three-quarters of respondents say that prioritizing speed and cost efficiency often leads to trade-offs in other critical areas

Better cybersecurity management is the most widely anticipated benefit (36%) of achieving the organization’s technology goals, followed by stronger risk management (29%)

Energy companies are entering a moment where legacy systems collide with rising digital demands. The ones that pair robust technology implementation strategies with disciplined execution will turn today’s disruption into tomorrow’s strength.
