Transforming work: Insights from American employees in the TMT industry
Shaping the future of work with AI, flexibility, learning, and leadership insights from the KPMG American Worker Survey.

The world of work is undergoing a significant transformation, particularly in the Technology, Media, and Telecommunications (TMT) sectors. New technologies, changing employee expectations, and evolving business needs are reshaping the workplace. The KPMG American Worker Survey, including over 1,800 US-based employees from various industries and generations, reveals a workforce on the cusp of significant change. While challenges persist, employers have opportunities to adapt and create a more resilient and motivated workforce.
The survey findings underscore the growing acceptance of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation in the workplace, with distinct trends and preferences emerging within technology, media and entertainment sector employees:
- AI and Automation: High adoption and optimism for generative AI and automation, most TMT employees believe automation has improved their professional abilities and will provide new career opportunities.
- Learning and Development: Continuous learning around automation tools is emphasized, with the majority of TMT workers agreeing on its importance.
- Work Flexibility: A significant portion of TMT employees prefer hybrid work over fully in-office or fully remote models.
- Four-day Work Week: A large majority of TMT industry employees believe a four-day work week would help balance work and personal life, and they could accomplish the same amount in four days as they currently do in five.
- Rethinking Degree Requirements: Almost half of TMT employees say their companies miss out on qualified candidates by requiring college degrees. This highlights a growing consensus to rethink traditional education requirements.
- Manager Engagement: TMT workers report high manager engagement.
As organizations within the TMT sectors embark on their transformative journey, they must prioritize transparency around their AI use, invest in upskilling programs, and accommodate employees' need for flexibility while balancing in-person collaboration. By embracing alternative hiring models and equipping managers with effective leadership skills, companies can retain top talent and prepare their workforce for the future.
