Corporate Sustainability

Our sustainability actions meet our environmental commitments, support regulatory compliance, and accelerate growth by reducing costs, generating more renewable energy, and pioneering capabilities that help our clients succeed.

KPMG has plans to achieve a goal of reducing Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions by 50% by 2030.

Our commitments and progress:

We strive to reduce our environmental impact across our value chain in ways that accelerate growth and innovation to meet the expectations of our clients and our people.

  • As of 2025, we have reduced total Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 40% since 2019, which is on pace to meet our goal of reducing those emissions by 50% by 2030.1
  • We continued to achieve our ambition of sourcing 100% renewable electricity, which we first achieved in 2019.
  • Emissions from business travel per headcount has decreased by 63% compared to our 2019 base year, which exceeds our goal of a 55% reduction by 2030.

However, we know that our biggest impact is learning from our own efforts and collaborating with clients to accelerate growth through smart, AI-enabled sustainability actions.

See the FY2025 Statement of GHG Emissions for additional detail.

“Embedding sustainability practices into our operations unlocks new possibilities for our clients, people, and firm. We know these efforts only work if we accelerate growth. With that mindset, we are driving operating efficiencies, generating more renewable energy, pioneering new AI solutions, and connecting with employees through purpose."

our mission

Working together, we innovate on sustainability to accelerate growth.

Operational efficiency

Optimizing our real estate footprint to drive a more cost-effective, efficient, and sustainable work environment.

Two Manhattan West

We consolidated operations at our headquarters in New York from three office buildings into one new modern office space. In 2026, we secured LEED Gold Certification, reflecting that our office is designed to reduce energy, water, and waste.

The space prioritizes sustainability through reusable products in employee hubs and pantries, indoor air quality performance, biophilic design elements, and LED lighting.

Lakehouse

Our cultural home and training center in Orlando achieved LEED Silver Certification in 2020 by integrating sustainability into building design and daily operations.

Sustainable design principles include:

  • Rooftop solar installations, high-performance windows, and low flow plumbing fixtures to reduce energy and water use.
  • Occupancy-based lighting, automated temperature controls, and real-time monitoring tools to detect excess energy use.
  • Native plants, requiring fewer pesticides, supported by smart irrigation systems designed to conserve water.
  • Ten electric vehicle chargers onsite for participants arriving in personal electric vehicles, offering a convenient charging solution during their visit.
  • Onsite beehives aiding in pollination, producing honey for select menu items, and raising awareness about ecosystem resilience.
  • Composting program diverting food waste from landfills, supported by extensive staff training on proper sorting to minimize contamination.

Internal carbon price (ICP)

As part of our commitment to factoring the cost of carbon into business decisions, we apply a carbon fee of $20 per metric ton CO2e to scope 1 and 2 emissions, as well as scope 3 emissions associated with business travel. This fee helps us gather information for internal planning and decision‑making.

Funds generated through the ICP are invested in sustainability initiatives that help us meet business objectives, including energy efficiency upgrades, renewable energy installations, innovative technology solutions, and employee engagement.

Water stewardship

KPMG U.S. has received The Water Council’s WAVE Water Stewardship verification, independently verified by SCS Global Services. As part of the program, we have evaluated our water use, impacts, and risks, and are exploring strategies that support long-term sustainable practices within our own operations and identifying opportunities for efficiency, resilience, and value creation. This includes monitoring water consumption associated with our data center operations.

Generating renewable power

In the era of AI, energy capacity is a critical issue. KPMG is having a direct impact on expanding renewable energy capacity to support the needs of our firm and society.

Power purchase agreements

We are generating new power for the grid by transitioning from renewable energy certificates toward two renewable power purchase agreements (RPPAs) for solar energy from sites in Texas. Both grid-scale projects came online in early 2026 and have the capacity to generate up to 350 MW of solar energy. The contracted portion of these projects secures KPMG cost-effective, long-term access to new energy sources.

Rooftop solar

We also operate a 1700 panel rooftop solar array at Lakehouse. Installed in 2024, the system generates approximately 720MWh per year, covering about 7% of our Lakehouse energy consumption.

Accelerating innovation

Emissions from our suppliers are inherently difficult to measure, but we are using AI to improve our approach. We developed a tool that classifies our procurement transactions into categories for emissions calculation, improving accuracy. We estimate that the use of this AI model has saved 7,000 hours of manual classification and review work to date. We have now implemented this tool with multiple clients.

We are also piloting new AI technology that allows us to improve accuracy of underlying supplier data. This tool can analyze product information, rather than spend data, allowing for more accurate reporting of emissions and targeted emissions reduction approaches.

Sustainability services

Our sustainability services range from strategy and reporting, to climate risk and supply chain traceability – with the ultimate goal of protecting and creating business value.

We empower business leaders to take responsible action to adapt, recover, and thrive amid climate change, resource scarcity, shifting geopolitics, and evolving regulations.
