Build a data-driven compliance program

How KPMG helped three clients overcome major transformation challenges

The good news for compliance leaders is that compliance technology solutions are continuously evolving and improving. As a result, compliance functions have more and better options for gathering accurate data as well as automating processes and controls.

The timing of these developments couldn’t be better as regulators continue to beat the drum for greater integration of business processes and controls into compliance operations and more comprehensive and relevant metrics to support better compliance risk management. The challenge for compliance leaders will be finding the right technology and using it the right way to effectively optimize their compliance programs.

Addressing compliance challenges with agile technology

KPMG helps organizations implement cost-effective compliance programs to become more technology driven and data rich. The examples below illustrate how some of our clients successfully met challenges after embracing our transformation solutions, approaches, and frameworks.

CHALLENGE 1
Client Story
KPMG takes bank on digital transformation journey
KPMG helps create a trusted cloud strategy, embedding risk and compliance.

Moving to the cloud
Before

A major national bank was looking to modernize its IT core and business operations by digitally transforming and moving to the cloud. Its goal was to provide better customer support while continuing to create innovative products and services. But it wasn’t able to integrate its legacy data and compliance processes and procedures into the new system.

Solution

KPMG guided the bank through the design and implementation of an agile compliance work-stream strategy that helped build stakeholder trust among customers, regulators, employees, and investors, while also solving the legacy data issue.

After

The bank now has a real-time, modern, industry-standard system that supports web and mobile customer banking. What’s more, legacy data can be seamlessly accessed, creating a better customer experience. In addition, when the bank later acquired another bank, it was easily able to integrate the acquired institution’s IT and compliance systems.

CHALLENGE 2
Client Story
Driving compliance for a global manufacturer
KPMG created a technology-enabled compliance program within a manufacturer’s business processes to help guide it down the right road.

Resolving an international incident

Before

The lack of consistent global standards at a large, international manufacturer put the company in legal jeopardy when one of its subsidiary’s ran afoul of regulations in the country in which it was operating.

Solution

After investigating the situation, KPMG found that the organization’s global compliance standards were inconsistent and outdated. In response, KPMG created a technology-enabled compliance program that could be embedded in the manufacturer’s business processes to help ensure compliance regardless of where it was operating.

After

Once the manufacturer’s executives understood that the cost of noncompliance could be several times greater than the cost of upgraded technology, they eagerly adopted our recommendations.

CHALLENGE 3

Mitigating a city’s immigrant crisis

Before

One of America’s largest cities was trying cope with an influx of immigrants and the increasing number and cost of resources needed to manage this situation. Part of this effort included searching for ways to guard against fraud, waste, abuse, and other irregularities. The city asked KPMG to serve as an “integrity monitor” of its immigrant care program.

Solution

KPMG helped establish a central data repository that captured all contract information—including updated extensions and amendments—from the subcontractors involved in the program. Relying on our cutting-edge data and analytics (D&A), artificial intelligence (AI) and intelligent automation (IA) tools, we tracked and analyzed all contract prices – even between siloed city agencies – spotted anomalies, and ensured accountability and compliance with regulations.

After

Our processes and resulting spending analysis added clarity to the city’s decision-making. It can now compare invoices, contracts, and individual line items across vendors, locations, and agencies. We helped improve the program’s efficiency; expanded the city’s ability to detect and prevent fraud, waste, and abuse; and saved taxpayers millions of dollars.
