To deliver the innovation the world needs now more than ever, the aerospace and defense (A&D) industry needs to continue to find new ways of working. Accomplishing this means that the industry must consider the grand challenges it faces and explore the strategic imperatives necessary for innovation.

In this paper we examine and detail six strategic imperatives that companies in this space should focus on in order to meet these grand challenges. These imperatives are:

  1. A coordinated effort is needed to address the clockspeed dilemma.
  2. Companies must use disaggregation to improve processes and foster innovation.
  3. Preserving optionality and modularity, particularly in technology, is key.
  4. A broad pursuit of sustainability will impact every part of the industry.
  5. Solving security issues has become paramount.
  6. New strategies are emerging to surmount workforce challenges.
