Netherlands: Plans for sugar tax on food and drinks
Government letter outlining the status of sugar taxation policy in the Netherlands
The Netherlands Ministry of Finance, together with the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, on June 12, 2026, submitted a government letter outlining the status of sugar taxation policy in the Netherlands.
The letter covers plans to convert the existing consumption tax on non-alcoholic drinks into a sugar-content-based tax and to develop a broader sugar tax for food products.
