EU revises Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP)

EU GSP is a sustainable development trade instrument covering 65 countries

The European Commission (EC), European Council, and European Parliament on December 1, 2025, reached an agreement to revise the Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP), the EU’s sustainable development trade tool for developing countries.

According to the EC release (December 2, 2025), key features of the new scheme include:

  • Smoother transitions for countries advancing in development status
  • More opportunities for low-income countries
  • Stronger human rights and labor standards
  • Possibility to withdraw benefits for environmental and climate violations
  • Improved monitoring and transparency
