The Department of Finance Canada will end the temporary remission of Canadian tariffs on imports of specific types of steel on January 31, 2026. This measure affects imported steel used for manufacturing, processing, food and beverage packaging, and agricultural production in Canada.

Earlier in 2025, Finance introduced a temporary remission program providing automatic relief from tariffs on specific goods for certain Canadian businesses. This program was extended twice—first to December 15, 2025, and now to January 31, 2026, for certain imported goods.

Additionally, Canada announced several related trade measures, including a 25% tariff on certain steel-derivative products from all countries, effective December 26, 2025, and reduced tariff rate quota levels for certain steel products from non-free trade agreement partners and non-United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) partners.
