U.S. implementation of framework agreement with Japan
President Trump signed an executive order implementing 15% tariff on nearly all Japanese imports
The White House has announced that President Trump signed an executive order implementing a framework agreement between the United States and Japan initially announced in July 2025 (read TradeNewsFlash).
According to a White House fact sheet (September 5, 2025), Japan committed to purchasing $8 billion in U.S. agricultural goods and $7 billion annually in U.S. energy, including liquified natural gas. Additionally, Japan will recognize U.S. automotive standards and lift restrictions on U.S. car and truck imports.
The United States will impose a 15% tariff on nearly all Japanese imports, with specific tariffs for certain sectors.
