United States imposes Section 232 tariffs on imports of timber, lumber, and wood products
Apply to goods entered for consumption on or after October 14, 2025
President Trump on September 29, 2025, signed a proclamation imposing new tariffs on imports of timber, lumber, and derivative wood products, under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962. This follows a U.S. Department of Commerce investigation that determined current import levels and practices threaten to impair U.S. national security by weakening the U.S. wood products industry and increasing reliance on non-U.S. suppliers, which could jeopardize critical infrastructure and defense readiness.
The proclamation establishes the following global tariff rates:
- 10% on softwood timber and lumber
- 25% on certain upholstered wooden furniture (increasing to 30% on January 1, 2026)
- 25% on kitchen cabinets and vanities (increasing to 50% on January 1, 2026)
These tariffs apply to goods entered for consumption or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption on or after October 14, 2025. Imports from the United Kingdom will not face tariffs above 10%, while imports from the European Union and Japan will not face combined tariffs above 15%, reflecting terms of existing trade agreements.
