The U.S. Treasury Department and IRS today released a document withdrawing proposed regulations (REG-129260-16) published on March 13, 2018, that would authorize the State Department to disclose returns and return information to its contractors who assist the State Department in carrying out certain responsibilities related to revoking or denying a passport of any individual certified to have a seriously delinquent tax debt.

The document states that the Treasury Department and IRS are withdrawing the proposed regulations because they have been determined to be unnecessary.

The proposed regulations will be withdrawn as of the date the document is published in the Federal Register, which is scheduled to be September 3, 2025.
