Surtax remains in place on imports of U.S. aluminum, steel and automobiles

Canada removed many of the retaliatory tariffs (i.e., surtax) on U.S. goods effective September 1, 2025, via an Order in Council. However, tariffs on U.S. aluminum, steel, and automobiles remain in place.

The removal of tariffs applies to goods previously surtaxed in March 2025, except for steel and aluminum products. Exemptions include qualifying heavy electric trucks and vintage vehicles.

Canada will also initiate public consultations in September 2025 to gather feedback on the global trade environment before the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) review in June 2026.
