European Commission proposes phase-out of Russian gas and oil imports
Measures to facilitate the complete stop of Russian oil imports by the end of 2027
The European Commission issued a release announcing a legislative proposal to gradually end the import of Russian gas and oil into the European Union by the end of 2027.
The plan includes a “stepwise phase-out” of pipeline gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia, with new contracts prohibited starting January 1, 2026, and existing short-term contracts ending by June 17, 2026. Long-term contracts will cease by the end of 2027, with specific provisions for landlocked countries.
The proposed regulation will proceed through the co-decision legislative process, requiring adoption by both the European Parliament and the Council.
