The extension has been made due to significant changes in the income tax return forms.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the due date for filing income tax returns for assessment year (AY) 2025–2026, which was earlier July 31, 2025, to September 15, 2025.

The extension has been made due to significant changes in the income tax return forms recently notified for AY 2025-2026 and as these updates require time for system development and testing, the extension allows adequate preparation time.

Additionally, credit arising from TDS statements due by May 31, 2025, are expected to reflect from early June, narrowing the window for effective return filing in the absence of such extension.
