White House announces extension of federal hiring freeze
Hiring freeze will remain in effect for IRS until the Secretary of the Treasury determines that it is in the national interest to terminate the freeze
The White House today announced that President Trump signed a presidential memorandum extending the federal hiring freeze for an additional three months through July 15, 2025.
According to the White House fact sheet, the hiring freeze—initially implemented on January 20, 2025 (read TaxNewsFlash)—restricts filling vacant federal civilian positions or creating new ones, with some exceptions. After the freeze ends, agencies will be limited to hiring one employee for every four departures, maintaining exceptions for critical areas.
In addition, the hiring freeze will remain in effect for the IRS until the Secretary of the Treasury determines that it is in the national interest to terminate the freeze.
