United States modifies reciprocal tariff rates in response to trading partner retaliation and alignment
Increases tariffs on Chinese imports to 125%; temporarily reduces duties to 10% for 75 trading partners
The White House on April 9, 2025, posted on its website an executive order modifying reciprocal tariff rates in response to trading partner retaliation and alignment. This follows Executive Order 14257, which declared a national emergency due to large and persistent U.S. goods trade deficits and imposed additional ad valorem duties.
The new order addresses China's announcement of an 84% tariff on U.S. goods, effective April 10, 2025. In response, the United States will increase duties on Chinese imports to 125%. The order also increases tariffs on low-value imports from China, raising the ad valorem rate from 90% to 120% and adjusting postal item duties.
Additionally, the order temporarily suspends country-specific ad valorem rates for 75 trading partners that have taken steps to remedy non-reciprocal trade arrangements, imposing a 10% duty instead.
