Imported goods valued at or under $800 and that would otherwise qualify for the de minimis exemption will be subject to all applicable duties
The White House today announced that President Trump signed an executive order to eliminate duty-free de minimis treatment for low-value imports from China, effective May 2, 2025.
According to a White House fact sheet, the executive order follows the Secretary of Commerce's confirmation of adequate systems to collect tariff revenue and ends the duty-free de minimis treatment for goods from China and Hong Kong valued at or under $800, subjecting them to applicable duties. Postal items valued at or under $800 will face a duty rate of either 30% of their value or $25 per item, increasing to $50 after June 1, 2025.
The action targets shipping practices by Chinese shippers that exploit the de minimis exemption to send illicit substances, including synthetic opioids, to the United States.
