Malta: Large taxpayer office established
Office aimed at providing more efficient, faster services to large taxpayers
The Malta Tax and Customs Administration (MTCA) has established a Large Taxpayer Office (LTO) focused on the tax affairs of large taxpayers and high net worth individuals and aimed at providing more efficient, faster services to those taxpayers.
Companies will qualify as “large taxpayers” if they have annual turnover in any year of assessment (YOA) from 2020 to 2022 in excess of €20 million and they meet either one of the following criteria:
- Employ a minimum of 50 employees in any basis year from 2019 to 2022
- For YOA 2022 reported a total value of more than €10 million in respect of domestic supplies and exports for value added tax (VAT) purposes
However, the Commissioner for Tax and Customs (CfTC) may, at his sole discretion, include companies from particular sectors, even if they do not meet these criteria.
The MTCA will notify taxpayers classified as large taxpayers and will also inform the relevant taxpayers when they no longer meet the respective criteria. However, once granted, large taxpayer status is retained for three years.
