IRS extends tax relief for North Carolina taxpayers due to Hurricane Helene
The new deadline is September 25, 2025.
The IRS today announced an extension of deadlines for taxpayers in North Carolina affected by Hurricane Helene. The new deadline is September 25, 2025, replacing the previous deadline of May 1, 2025, for various tax forms, including Form 1040 (read TaxNewsFlash).
According to today’s IRS release—NC-2025-01—this extension applies to areas designated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as disaster zones, allowing individuals and businesses anywhere in North Carolina to benefit from the relief. The IRS has automatically provided filing and penalty relief to taxpayers with an address of record in the disaster area. Those outside the area but affected can contact the IRS for assistance.
The relief covers tax filing and payment deadlines from September 25, 2024, through September 25, 2025. This includes individual income tax returns, individual retirement account (IRA) contributions, quarterly estimated tax payments, and more. Taxpayers needing more time can file Form 4868 for a filing deadline extension until October 15, 2025, though payments remain due by September 25, 2025.
