EU pauses countermeasures against U.S. tariffs to allow for negotiations
Countermeasures suspended until July 14, 2025
The European Union (EU) has decided to pause its countermeasures on U.S. trade tariffs for 90 days to allow time for negotiations.
The EC release (April 13, 2025) explains that the two legal acts adopted by the European Commission (EC) impose and then suspend its countermeasures:
- The first act imposes the EU countermeasures.
- The second act suspends all such measures until July 14, 2025.
The decision to pause the countermeasures, which cover €21 billion of U.S. exports, is in response to the United States delaying its reciprocal tariffs by 90 days. The EU's planned countermeasures were initially a response to the United States imposing 25% tariffs on imports of steel, aluminum, and derivative products on March 12, 2025.
