April 8, 2025

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) on April 3, 2025, issued a reminder that companies intending to claim the research and development (R&D) tax offset for the 2023-2024 financial year must register their R&D tax incentive activities with the Department of Industry, Science and Resources (DISR) by April 30, 2025, to be eligible for the tax offset. Companies unable to meet the deadline may request an extension.

However, registration does not guarantee the incentive, as the ATO will independently review claims. Companies are urged to maintain comprehensive records of their R&D activities and related expenditures from the time these activities occur.

Both the ATO and DISR will perform compliance reviews and audits to ensure adherence to the law.
