Investigation will assess factors such as domestic production capacity, non-U.S. competition, and the impact of non-U.S. subsidies
President Trump on March 1, 2025, signed an executive order directing the U.S. Department of Commerce to investigate the impact of timber, lumber, and their derivative product imports on national security under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962. This investigation comes amid concerns over vulnerabilities in the wood supply chain due to non-U.S. imports.
According to the executive order, the United States has significant timber resources and the capacity to supply 95% of its softwood consumption for 2024. However, since 2016, the United States has been a net importer of lumber.
The investigation will assess factors such as U.S. production capacity, non-U.S. competition, and the impact of non-U.S. subsidies. The Secretary of Commerce will consult with the Secretary of Defense and other relevant agencies to evaluate national security risks. A report with findings and recommendations, including potential tariffs or incentives to boost domestic production, is due within 270 days (from March 1, 2025).
