Canada also requested WTO dispute consultations
The Canadian government on March 4, 2025, announced a series of countermeasures in response to the United States imposing tariffs of 25% on Canadian exports and 10% on energy product exports from Canada. The United States further imposed tariffs on March 12, 2025, of 25% on Canadian steel and aluminum products.
According to Government of Canada webpage, Canada's initial response includes imposing tariffs on U.S. goods, effective March 4, 2025. The list of affected products includes orange juice, peanut butter, wine, spirits, beer, coffee, appliances, apparel, footwear, motorcycles, cosmetics, and certain paper products. Additional tariffs will be applied on April 2, following a public comment period.
In response to the steel and aluminum tariffs, Canada is implementing a dollar-for-dollar approach, effective March 13, 2025, with 25% reciprocal tariffs on steel products, aluminum products, and additional U.S. goods. The additional products affected include tools, computers and servers, display monitors, sports equipment, and cast-iron products.
WTO dispute
Canada has also requested World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute consultations with the United States regarding the imposition by the United States of import duties on certain steel and aluminum products from Canada.
