Entry of certain low-value shipments not exceeding $800
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Department of the Treasury today released a notice of proposed rulemaking (86 pages) to amend regulations concerning the entry of certain low-value shipments not exceeding $800 that are eligible for an administrative exemption from duty and tax.
The proposed amendments aim to create a new process for entering low-value shipments, enhancing CBP's ability to target high-risk shipments, such as those containing synthetic opioids like illicit fentanyl. The proposal also includes revising the current process to require additional data elements to verify eligibility for duty- and tax-free entry.
Comments on the proposed rule must be submitted by 60 days after its publication in the Federal Register, which is scheduled to be January 14, 2025.
