House passes bill increasing penalties for illegal tax disclosures

The U.S. House of Representatives yesterday passed H.R. 8292, the “Taxpayer Data Protection Act,” by a voice vote.

The legislation would:

  • Increase the maximum fine and imprisonment period for an unauthorized disclosure of taxpayer information within the meaning of section 6103 from “$5,000, or imprisonment of not more than 5 years” to “$250,000, or imprisonment of not more than 10 years”
  • Clarify that any violation that affects more than one taxpayer shall be treated as a separate, distinct violation
