Maguire becomes first Irish woman ever to win on Ladies European Tour
Now that is how you win in style.
KPMG ambassador Leona Maguire saved the best for last on Friday, making an eagle on the final hole to win by a stroke for her first ever Ladies European Tour victory. The win is the first ever by an Irishwoman on the Ladies European Tour.
"It was almost a bit like a Solheim Cup," Maguire said. "I knew that no Irish girl had ever won on the LET before, so that (eagle) putt was for me, for my family, and for Ireland. A proud moment for all of us."
Maguire had a bit of an up and down day after entering Friday’s final round with a two-shot lead. Spain’s Maria Hernandez finished strong with a final round 66, taking the clubhouse lead at -7 while Maguire still had two holes to play. After managing par on 17, Maguire delivered in the clutch, knocking her second shot to eight feet and draining the putt for the win.
"I did it the hard way today," Maguire said. "It was tough out there. My caddie, Dermot, kept telling me to be patient, and told me to hit my shot of the year on 18. It was a perfect number and my trusty hybrids came in useful once again."
With the win, Maguire will be riding a wave of momentum into next week’s Evian Championship in France, the fourth major championship of the LPGA season. Congratulations Leona on a historic and thrilling victory in London!
