Managing Director, Excise Tax Practice

Taylor Cortright, a managing director, draws on over 20 years of experience to lead KPMG's Washington National Tax Federal Excise Tax practice. Her services include consulting, controversy, and compliance services covering a complete range of excise taxes administered by both the Internal Revenue Service and the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax Trade Bureau, including manufacturers taxes (e.g., taxable fuel; tires; medical devices), air transportation taxes, environmental taxes (e.g., ozone-depleting chemicals; oil spill; superfund), retail taxes (e.g., alternative fuels; heavy trucks and trailers), foreign insurance tax, alcohol, biodiesel, alternative fuel credits, and taxes imposed on alcohol beverages, tobacco, and firearms.

Taylor is a founding member of KPMG’s Global Excise & Environmental Taxes Virtual Center of Excellence, a community of indirect tax professionals that advises the firm’s clients worldwide on existing and emerging issues and opportunities.

Prior to joining KPMG, Taylor spent 11 years as an attorney at the IRS Office of Chief Counsel, which included a six year role as a senior attorney in the Excise Tax Branch, where she received a national award and recognition for drafting regulations, rulings, and other published guidance. While at the IRS, she worked with the Treasury Department, the Department of Justice, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, and the Department of Transportation to coordinate issues related to the administration of federal excise taxes. She also represented the IRS Commissioner before the United States Tax Court.
