Matthew Birnbaum

Matthew is an Advisory Managing Director in KPMG’s Forensic practice in New York, with more than 15 years of experience advising on complex litigation, investigations, regulatory matters, digital forensics, and eDiscovery. Before joining KPMG, he held legal and advisory roles at global law firms and corporations, supporting counsel and legal departments in matters involving significant data, evidentiary, and technology considerations.

Before joining KPMG, Matthew served as eDiscovery Solutions Counsel at Latham & Watkins LLP. He worked with trial teams, corporate legal departments, and firm leadership on cross-border litigation, regulatory enforcement matters, government inquiries, and internal investigations. His work included developing defensible discovery strategies, addressing complex data and preservation issues, and applying analytics and AI-assisted review where appropriate.

Previously, Matthew spent nearly six years at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP, managing digital investigation and discovery workflows for significant domestic and international disputes. Earlier in his career, he was a Project Manager at Stroz Friedberg, where he led data collections, forensic analyses, and evidence preservation efforts in support of litigation and investigations. He began his legal career as a Securities Discovery Attorney at Levi & Korsinsky, LLP.

At KPMG, Matthew advises law firms and corporate legal departments on complex litigation, internal and regulatory investigations, monitorships, and eDiscovery program matters. His experience as an attorney and former discovery counsel informs a practical approach to legal strategy, defensibility, evidence management, and the use of technology throughout the matter lifecycle.

Matthew also serves as Co-Chair of the New York State Bar Association’s eDiscovery Committee, collaborating with members of the judiciary and legal community to advance professional education, industry standards, and best practices related to emerging technology and eDiscovery law.
