Beyond the sustainability report
Practical examples from real-world leaders
In this article series, we have established a clear and urgent message: sustainability data is no longer a peripheral concern, managed only for compliance and reporting, but a core strategic asset essential for building a resilient and competitive business.
This journey began by shifting perspective, treating sustainability not as a cost center but as a driver of innovation and advantage - moving beyond fragmented, manual, and reactive data practices toward a future that is automated, integrated, and predictive. From there, the critical importance of the supply chain comes into sharp focus, where trusted, traceable data poses a formidable defense against significant operational and financial risk.
With a solid data foundation in place - a single source of truth - organizations can unlock the transformative power of technologies like AI to scale expertise and accelerate value creation. Yet, for many business leaders, the path from theory to practice remains unclear.
The most compelling arguments are those demonstrated by real-world results. How does a company actually turn sustainability data into a competitive edge? What does a truly resilient, data-driven supply chain look like in action?
We now move from the “what” and “why” to the “how“ - exploring case studies that bring these principles to life, illustrating how leading companies are harnessing their sustainability data to mitigate risk, uncover efficiencies, and create tangible business value. These examples provide a practical blueprint for leaders ready to take action and transform their operations.
Beyond the spreadsheet: Powering supplier sustainability with a unified data platform
For a global technology client, a significant challenge to achieving its emissions reduction goals lay far beyond its own operational footprint, deep within its vast and complex global supply chain. Yet its Scope 3 emissions data was fragmented across thousands of suppliers, inconsistent, and difficult to calculate and verify. This lack of trusted, actionable data created a significant business risk, making it nearly impossible - and heavily resource-intensive - to accurately track progress or make the strategic procurement decisions needed to get there.
KPMG LLP collaborated with the company’s sustainability and procurement teams to create a unified data platform that could automate the ingestion, calculation, and analysis of Scope 3 emissions data from suppliers globally, replacing a cumbersome system of estimates and manual data collection. The solution streamlined the process for both the client and its suppliers, reducing the need for manual tracking and human interaction. On top of the reduced labor needed to drive the process, it also helped improve accuracy and dependability of the supplier data by leveraging an AI-integrated solution to detect errors, improve communication, and guide towards compliance in sustainability reporting.
This client’s journey offers a clear lesson for any organization seeking to track emissions across a significant supply chain footprint: to build and scale data reporting across the supply base, organizations are moving beyond spreadsheets and investing in unified data platforms that can create a single source of truth for supplier performance. This not only enables accurate tracking and reporting but also unlocks the insights needed to identify risks, drive efficiencies, and collaborate effectively with partners on sustainability goals.
From compliance to data-driven advantage: KNAPP AG transforms sustainability reporting with SAP and KPMG
As a high-tech leader in intelligent warehouse systems, KNAPP AG recognized that its internal corporate technology needed to mirror the innovation it delivers to clients. Faced with upcoming EU sustainability reporting requirements, the company saw an opportunity to move beyond labor-intensive compliance and transform its data infrastructure. The goal was to establish a resource-efficient, automated solution that would not only meet regulatory demands but also unlock the strategic value of its sustainability data, allowing the organization to focus on meaningful action rather than manual reporting.
To achieve this, KNAPP AG launched "now4tomorrow," an extensive three-year program with KPMG to overhaul its data systems and processes. The company implemented a suite of integrated SAP sustainability products to create a unified data foundation. This involved deploying SAP Datasphere to consolidate information from across the business into a single source of truth. Layered on top, SAP Sustainability Control Tower automated the collection and reporting of ESG data, while SAP Sustainability Footprint Management provided the tools to calculate their corporate and product carbon footprints at scale.
This strategic investment helps ensure KNAPP is on track to meet its reporting deadlines and has fundamentally enhanced its business intelligence capabilities. By transforming a regulatory requirement into a corporate-wide initiative, the company can now leverage rich data through advanced dashboards and analytics. This newfound transparency empowers KNAPP to make more informed, data-driven decisions, improve strategic planning, and solidify its position as a forward-thinking, sustainable leader in the technology industry.
Visualizing a cleaner future: How a digital twin can drive collaborative environmental action
Faced with increasing levels of waste in rivers and surrounding oceans, one nation in Asia Pacific set an ambitious national plan of action to reduce waste in critical bodies of water, setting a country-wide blueprint for resource and waste management. By harnessing digital twin technologies to enhance planning and optimize decision-making, the government set out to revitalize a river running through one of its major metropolitan areas.
KPMG assisted with developing a digital twin prototype that required working closely with multiple government agencies to compile an extensive data catalogue with over 250 datasets across more than 40 data sources. The digital twin was designed to analyze and visualize river conservation and cleanup, urban transport planning, infrastructure development, and climate-related disaster resilience. A 3-D visualization of the river allowed stakeholders to seamlessly explore multiple data layers.
By breaking down data silos and investing in integrated, predictive data models, harnessing innovative technologies like digital twins can help organizations unlock the actionable, forward-looking insights needed for effective, data-driven action.
KPMG US’s journey: Enabling real-time sustainability insights through AI-powered dashboards
Like many of our clients, KPMG faces significant challenges in tracking our progress towards ambitious, science-based environmental targets, such as carbon emissions reduction goals. The data exists, but it may be fragmented, relying on disconnected spreadsheets and static reports. KPMG’s US Corporate Sustainability team was manually developing visualizations, Excel-based analyses, and slide decks to respond to targeted leadership questions. This lack of a consolidated, real-time view made it difficult for leadership to track progress against goals and make timely, informed decisions.
To solve this, KPMG US used specification‑first, review‑driven AI workflows to develop a dynamic, AI-powered Decarbonization tool. This single tool replaced over a dozen disparate data sources, creating a single source of truth for our performance. It provides a dynamic, integrated, real-time view of our actual and projected emissions, alongside financial analysis of various decarbonization levers.
The impact was transformative. By automating and enhancing our internal reporting with AI, KPMG US reduced the time required to gather and analyze performance data by up to 80%.The tool critically moves beyond static, backward-looking reporting by enabling interactive, forward-looking analysis—empowering our leadership with predictive insights, enabling more agile and effective management of our firm’s sustainability performance, and helping to ensure we stay on track to meet our critical environmental goals.
The path forward: Unlocking business value with sustainability data
These case studies demonstrate a powerful, shared narrative: Leading organizations are no longer just managing sustainability data for compliance; they are treating it as a core strategic asset to build more resilient operations and unlock new avenues for growth. By moving beyond manual processes and disconnected data silos, leading enterprises are realizing clear, tangible value - drastically reducing operational costs and labor associated with data collection, enhancing their strategic planning capabilities through forward-looking insights, and improving risk management via automated error detection capabilities.
The journey from theory to practice is achievable. For companies ready to take the next step, the path forward starts with small, practical, strategic actions:
