Nigeria: Guidelines on taxation of virtual assets

Income tax, VAT, and stamp duty treatment for transactions involving virtual assets

september 8, 2026

The Nigeria Revenue Service on July 31, 2026, issued guidelines on the taxation of virtual assets, which provide a standardized framework for the taxation, reporting, valuation, and compliance obligations applicable to taxpayers, virtual asset service providers (VASPs), and peer-to-peer marketplace operators.

The guidelines classify virtual assets into six categories (including cryptocurrencies, stablecoins, security tokens, utility tokens, NFTs, and sovereign digital currencies) and set out the applicable income tax, VAT, and stamp duty treatment for transactions involving those assets.
