U.S. BIS seeks comments on proposed implementation of Section 232 tariffs on additional aluminum, steel, and copper derivative articles
Comments are due 21 days after publication in the Federal Register.
The Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) on August 4, 2026, released a notice requesting public comments on a proposal to add 14 additional derivative articles to the scope of Section 232 tariffs on aluminum, steel, and copper.
The proposed additions include aluminum powder; certain brass-wind musical instruments and parts; welding machine parts; floor safes; certain electric conductor cables; fire extinguishers; heat exchanger parts; hydraulic engine and motor parts; specified cranes and lifting equipment; certain trailers and semi-trailers; and filled steel containers containing propane, oxygen, or propylene.
Most of the products would be subject to a 25% tariff if included within the scope of the Section 232 measures, although certain products would be subject to different rates under existing proclamations.
BIS is seeking comments regarding the products' aluminum, steel, and copper content, import volumes, domestic production capacity, and potential economic effects. The notice is scheduled for publication in the Federal Register on August 6, 2026, and comments are due 21 days after that date.
