President Trump today signed an executive order establishing measures designed to secure U.S. defense supply chains by restricting the acquisition of critical materials and components from foreign adversaries.
According to the White House release, the directive limits the circumstances under which the Secretary of Defense may grant waivers for critical materials from covered nations, in some cases requiring supply chain onshoring mitigation plans. Additionally, the order instructs the Department of War to initiate regulatory action mandating comprehensive supply chain mapping for designated critical supply chains and encourages defense contractors to qualify new domestic and partner nation sources by removing regulatory barriers.
