Switzerland: Increased VAT rates from 2028 approved by Parliament
Measure now requires approval by voters and cantons through a mandatory referendum.
The Swiss Parliament on June 19, 2026, approved an increase in VAT rates to help finance the 13th state pension.
- The standard VAT rate will increase by 0.4% from 2028.
- The special hotel VAT rate will increase by 0.2%.
- The reduced rate for daily necessities such as food and medicine will remain unchanged.
The measure now requires approval by voters and cantons through a mandatory referendum.
