Sweden: Proposal to extend temporary reductions in fuel taxes

Implementation requires EU Council authorization under the Energy Tax Directive.

The government of Sweden on May 27, 2026, presented a supplementary amending budget including proposals to:

  • Extend reduced tax rates on diesel used in certain sectors into 2027
  • Introduce temporary reductions in carbon dioxide tax on gasoline and diesel by SEK2.40 per liter from July 1, 2026, to November 30, 2026

Implementation requires EU Council authorization under the Energy Tax Directive.
