Sweden: Proposal to temporarily reduce tax on fuel

The government submitted an extra amending budget proposal for 2026.

May 22, 2026

The government of Sweden in April 2026 submitted an extra amending budget proposal for 2026, proposing temporary tax relief measures in response to rising energy prices.

The proposal would temporarily lower the energy tax on petrol and diesel to the minimum levels permitted under the EU energy taxation directive to mitigate price increases linked to the Middle East conflict.
