Australia: Parliamentary committee recommends implementing digital services tax

The Australian Parliament Joint Select Committee on Social Media and Australian Society released a report recommending the government explore implementing a revenue mechanism, such as a digital platform levy, on digital platforms.

The committee noted that a levy drawn from the revenues of the digital platforms could be used to support public interest journalism, improve media literacy, and provide for mechanisms to ensure technical transparency in the operation of algorithms and recommender systems which drive the content that users are exposed to.
