John V Russo

John is the National Industry Leader for KPMG’s Public Investment Management Practice. John has over 25 years of experience providing audit services to investment management clients, including investment advisers, registered mutual funds, exchange traded funds, business development companies and non-registered investment companies. John is part of a select group of partners at KPMG responsible for performing concurring reviews of SEC registrants.

From 2012 through 2014, John was a partner in KPMG’s Department of Professional Practice (national technical group) focusing on the Investment Management industry. In his role, John worked with engagement teams to solve complex accounting and auditing matters involving business development companies, registered and non-registered investment companies and investment advisers.

Prior to joining the Department of Professional Practice, John spent over two years in the Division of Investment Management’s Office of Chief Accountant at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission as an Assistant Chief Accountant. In his capacity at the SEC, John worked with many of the industry’s largest and most pioneering companies and provided guidance to 40 Act registrants, their external counsel, and their auditors on complex accounting, auditing, and regulatory matters. John provided technical accounting support to the Office of Disclosure and Review on the application of US GAAP and the SEC’s rules and regulations for numerous SEC filings for business development companies, such as initial and secondary public offerings on Form N-2, and periodic reporting on Forms 10-K and 10-Q. John also provided technical accounting support, and interpretative guidance to the SEC’s Office of Compliance, Inspections and Examinations (OCIE) program.

John is a frequent speaker at national industry conferences sponsored by the Investment Company Institute, Mutual Fund Directors Forum and Independent Directors Counsel. John has published articles on investment company industry topics such as the co-author of KPMG’s White Paper on Valuation and a contributing author of KPMG’s Illustrative Financial Statements, and other thought leadership topics impacting the investment management industry.
