Dr. Cian C. Reeves is a Manager in KPMG’s Emerging Technologies practice, where he focuses on quantum research and the application of advanced quantum computing algorithms to real-world business challenges. With a background in computational materials science and quantum chemistry, he specializes in translating complex scientific concepts into practical solutions, helping organizations explore quantum use cases and prepare for the adoption of emerging technologies.
Cian brings more than a decade of academic experience, including extensive research at the intersection of computational physics, materials science, and quantum chemistry. His work has included developing state-of-the-art computational software for studying quantum systems and leading cross-disciplinary collaborations, with published research spanning materials science, machine learning, applied mathematics, and computational physics.
At KPMG, Cian conducts applied research in quantum computing, with a focus on identifying practical approaches to enterprise challenges using current and near-term quantum systems. He combines deep technical expertise with cross-domain experience to help organizations understand complex problems and evaluate emerging quantum solutions across industries.
Prior to joining KPMG, Cian was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Chicago, where he worked on computational methods to simulate and understand materials for quantum information science. During his doctoral research at the University of California Santa Barbara, he explored how errors propagate through quantum circuits and developed efficient classical simulations to evaluate performance under different noise models. He later contributed to a U.S. Department of Energy–funded research center focused on time-dependent quantum systems, where he supported cross-institution collaboration, advanced open-source software development, and contributed to research publications and grant initiatives.
He began his research career at the Hearne Institute for Theoretical Physics at Louisiana State University, where he studied qubit decoherence and applied machine learning techniques to mitigate quantum information loss. His technical expertise includes quantum computing and algorithms, quantum chemistry methods, high-performance computing, and scientific programming, alongside experience in research management, technical writing, and Linux-based environments.
Cian collaborates with global research ecosystems, including the Chicago Quantum Exchange. He holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Physics from the University of California Santa Barbara and a B.A. (First Class Honors) in Theoretical Physics from Trinity College Dublin.
