Build value with the right partner ecosystem

Accelerate growth and innovation with a fresh approach to choosing, managing, and measuring strategic ecosystem partners.

In an increasingly competitive and dynamic business environment, organizations are recognizing the critical role that strategic partnerships play in driving transformation, growth, and innovation. However, many companies struggle to effectively leverage these alliances, often relying on ad hoc accidental partnerships that ultimately fail to deliver the desired results. The partners in your ecosystem should be chosen for their ability to help your organization realize more innovative products and services, faster time to market, and expanded customer reach.

Based on a primary research survey of 258 senior leaders at large organizations, our recent thought leadership outlines the benefits of shifting to an intentional, outcome-oriented approach to unlock the full potential of partnerships in accelerating progress, enhancing capabilities, and creating sustainable value.

Defining partner and partner ecosystem

A partner is any third party that an organization uses to enable or advance strategic and operational objectives, initiatives, and programs.

A partner ecosystem is a dynamic network of interconnected companies that collaborate for mutual benefit and—if designed and managed well—deliver more value than any one component could alone.

Highlights of the white paper include:

Companies are on the hunt for partners.

Most respondents to our survey believe their ecosystems can help increase revenue and profitability.

83% plan to expand their partner network in the next 1-3 years

Nearly half are exploring new types of alliances to promote innovation and spur growth

Nearly half are focused on partners that can co-create new and improved offerings

Partner ecosystems are changing.

Historically, technology partners dominated partner ecosystems as companies sought to accelerate digital transformation. However, the most successful companies will expand that purview to include AI-centric, cross-sector, and managed services partners.

80% plan to look beyond their industry for the right partners

43% want to work with incubators and accelerators to test emerging technologies

54% are prioritizing generative AI ahead of cloud and SaaS technology partnerships

Some companies struggle with measuring success and incentivizing results.

It is critical to establish a mutually beneficial management and incentive structure for your partner ecosystem.

Only 36% consistently measure partner performance

Only 38% expect ecosystems to align to enterprise strategies

71% have trouble aligning partners on goals

Forward-thinking companies want a roadmap to help them shift to intentional partner ecosystems.

It is critical to follow certain guidelines to create partnership ecosystems that support longer-term business goals. For example:

  • Determine how the right partners can help advance your future business strategy
  • Foster interoperability by encouraging partners to work together as a team
  • Manage—and measure— both financial (e.g., revenue growth) and non-financial value (e.g., brand reputation)
  • Reduce third party risk with partners providing mission-critical services by ensuring that they are aligned with your data sharing, privacy, and cybersecurity standards
  • Consider performance-based gainsharing to help motivate partner success
