Industrial manufacturing risk outlook: 2023 CRO Survey

CROs are aligning risk with strategy, integrating digital tools, and optimizing risk management.

Industrial manufacturing companies face a complex risk landscape as they navigate challenges ranging from regulatory changes and supply chain disruptions to geopolitical risks and compliance pressures. Our 2023 Chief Risk Officer Survey reveals how industrial manufacturing risk leaders are addressing current and future risk challenges, opportunities, and priorities.

Below are key findings from our survey of 41 U.S. industrial manufacturing risk executives:

  • In the next 2-5 years, leaders see business resiliency (39 percent), regulatory changes and compliance issues (39 percent), and supply chain disruptions (37 percent) as the most important issues.
  • 85 percent of leaders feel well prepared for ESG risks, 75 percent for regulatory changes, and 69 percent for business resiliency challenges.
  • To enhance risk strategies, 56 percent plan to better align risk strategy with business objectives and 44 percent will improve risk identification and assessment.
  • 54 percent face the most pressure from regulators/government agencies and 27 percent from investors regarding regulatory compliance.
  • 49 percent are prioritizing employee training in targeted and specialized areas and 46 percent are engaging leadership to increase risk management effectiveness.

Industrial manufacturing chief risk officers are focusing on building resilience, strengthening regulatory compliance, integrating digital tools, and optimizing operating models to work through the fast-changing risk environment. With the right strategies and support, risk management can be transformed from a challenge into a competitive advantage.
