Five things agency leaders need to be preparing for now

Keeping up with GenAI and OMB M-24-10

Few technologies have transitioned from obscurity to implementation as rapidly as Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI).

Seemingly matching its pace has been the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) with its Memorandum M-24-10 from March 2024. OMB M-24-10 established requirements for AI governance, innovation, and risk management, mandated federal agencies to identify and remove barriers to AI adoption, and set an aggressive 60-day deadline for most to appoint a Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO).

Are you ready to be a trailblazer?

Given the remarkable pace at which AI technologies are advancing, CAIOs and their agencies are finding themselves in the unusual yet exciting position as early adopters.

Historically, governments have always relied on the private sector to blaze the trail ahead, to work out the kinks, discover where the landmines were buried, and provide models for optimum deployment efficiency and value. But not in this case, where even GenAI developers and solution providers are struggling to keep up with this rapidly evolving technology.

Taking on the challenge

To help CAIOs and agency leaders get out ahead of these issues, we’ve come up with a list of five things we believe they should be thinking about now to lay the groundwork for OMB M-24-10 compliance and successful GenAI adoption.

1

Start building an AI-ready culture now.

With fear and uncertainty surrounding the impact of AI on their jobs, employees could be the biggest impediment to your GenAI ambitions. But there are things you can do to turn them into your biggest allies.

2

Focus on the right challenges.

GenAI can change things. Lots of things. From contracts and budgets to training and security, there are many factors to consider. Are your priorities in order?

3

Understand what the technology really can and can’t do.

There’s lots of hype surrounding GenAI. Misunderstanding its strengths could have you focusing on the wrong applications—and missing out on the ideal uses.

4

Focus on the use cases and the risks, not the technology.

The best use of GenAI advances the agency’s mission in some way. From quick wins to more advanced uses, we have a few ideas.

5

Stay ahead of cost and budgeting issues.

Licensing fees can be a quagmire. Matching GenAI functions to use cases to users can be extraordinarily complex. Don’t forget ROI—avoid uses where costs exceed the benefits.
