The IRS today issued a release reminding farmers and fishers who did not make estimated tax payments by January to file their 2024 federal income tax return and pay all taxes by March 3, 2025 (the usual March 1 deadline falls on a Saturday this year).

Today’s IRS release—IR-2025-27—explains that the March 3, 2025 deadline applies to anyone who qualifies as a farmer or fisher and did not make a 2024 estimated tax payment by January 15, 2025. Farmers and fishers who made a qualifying estimated tax payment by January 15, 2025, can file and pay by April 15, 2025, without penalties. A farmer or fisher is defined as someone who earned at least two-thirds of their gross income from farming or fishing in 2023 or 2024.

Disaster-area taxpayers in specified states* have until May 1, 2025, to file and pay, with further extension requests available for filing only. California wildfire victims have until October 15, 2025, and Kentucky taxpayers until November 3, 2025, to file and pay. Information on qualified disaster declarations and extended deadlines can be found on KPMG’s dedicated website.

* Taxpayers in the entire states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina, and parts of Alaska, New Mexico, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia
