Patrick Styles assists clients across Europe with their U.S. tax obligations. He has more than 18 years of experience in tax advisory, compliance, accounting, due diligence, and structuring services for clients, principally in the insurance industry.
Patrick has extensive experience in the insurance industry, ACS 740 Accounting for Income Taxes, SSAP 101 Statutory Accounting for Income Taxes, and tax and accounting advisory related to insurance mergers and acquisitions. He has served both life and general insurance clients in every size and phase of their lifecycle from start up to maturity to runoff.
Patrick experience includes:
- Serving as the tax partner for financial statement audits of several Fortune 500, Fortune 1000, and other public and privately held companies, including coordinating global teams across KPMG International’s member firms for many of his clients
- Leading tax compliance and process improvement engagements for many clients, including use of his deep background in Subchapter L and in addressing the challenges associated with insurance tax return compliance
- Enhancing compliance processes and efficiency, as a member of a national strategic leadership team related to KPMG’s offshoring practice, a project manager responsible for the development and deployment of internally developed tax software, and a national internal and external instructor for KPMG’s insurance, intern, and new-hire programs
- Assisting clients with their acquisition efforts by performing buy-side due diligence with respect to their intended targets, with specific experience in the acquisition of life business through reinsurance, the acquisition of domestic and foreign life insurance and general insurance companies, and diligence surrounding transferred investments in connection with pension plan buyouts
- Providing clients with advice related to the federal tax consequences of corporate transactions including acquisitions, restructurings, global reinsurance strategies, dispositions, and spin-offss, including the coordination of geographically and functionally diverse teams as well as the coordination of international teams regarding local tax impacts.
Patrick is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He is a frequent speaker at industry events, including the Insurance Tax Conference, the Federal Bar Association Insurance Tax Conference, the Society of Insurance Financial Managers, and KPMG webcasts and internal and external trainings.
Patrick received his BS and MS degrees from Appalachian State University. He is a certified public accountant in New York and North Carolina.
