Karen S. Messner is a Senior Manager in the Income Tax and Accounting Group in Washington National Tax (WNT) based in Washington, D.C. She has over 20 years of experience consulting on federal tax accounting issues, including accounting methods, timing provisions governing income and expense recognition, accounting period issues, Internal Revenue Service procedures regarding changes in accounting methods and accounting periods, and assisting clients in filing accounting method and accounting period changes with the Internal Revenue Service.
Prior to joining KPMG, Karen worked in the national office of two other big four accounting firms, consulting with clients in a variety of industries, representing clients before the IRS National Office on accounting method and accounting period changes, and managing each firm’s method change filing process from the initial review and filing the requests with IRS National Office, to the issuance of a ruling letter by IRS National Office. Karen also regularly trained colleagues on accounting method technical and procedural issues. In her role in WNT, Karen works closely with the Accounting Methods and Credit Services and Federal Tax practices assisting clients across a number of industries with accounting methods and accounting period issues.
Karen began her career at the Office of Chief Counsel, Income Tax & Accounting Division, reviewing and ruling on accounting method change applications, accounting period change applications, and ruling requests asking for such applications that were filed late to be considered timely filed (9100 relief requests).
