Tom is a Partner based out of Portland, Oregon and leads KPMG’s Research Credit Services practice for the Pacific Northwest.
For the past 17 years, Tom has specialized in federal and state R&D credits, embedded cost reviews and the Orphan Drug Credit. His experience consists of all stages of these projects, from initial assessments to IRS audit defense.
In this capacity, Tom oversees fieldwork for projects ranging from start-ups and mid-market to Fortune 500 companies. Tom’s experience includes costing analysis, R&D interviews, compilation of contemporaneous documentation, preparation of audit ready deliverables, and IRS audit support, including appeals. Tom works closely with KPMG’s Washington National Tax practice to determine firm positions on new and/or unclear areas of tax law.
He also has industry experience overseeing global R&D tax incentives while working at a large multi-national technology company. As a result, Tom is familiar with R&D tax incentive regimes in Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom.
Tom co-leads the development of technology tools and applications for KPMG’s national Research Credit Service practice. In this capacity, he works closely with our alliance partner, IBM, to further develop our Research Credit Services with IBM Watson solution. Tom also works closely with KPMG’s Ignition center both in developing data and analytics tools and capabilities for R&D credit studies as well as developing data solutions for clients.
Tom presents regularly at TEI and KPMG hosted CPE events and he presented at IBM Data’s Artificial Intelligence Forum.
