Industries

Helping clients meet their business challenges begins with an in-depth understanding of the industries in which they work. That’s why KPMG LLP established its industry-driven structure. In fact, KPMG LLP was the first of the Big Four firms to organize itself along the same industry lines as clients.

Development & Exempt Organization Tax Services

Helping tax-exempt organizations deliver lasting value

Development & Exempt Organization Tax Services
Keep up with requirements to reap benefits

Your tax-exempt status has strict rules and regulations along with its advantages. Rules change frequently, and tax authorities will notice oversights.

Know the rules

It is more important than ever for organizations to be fully compliant. We help manage compliance and provide ongoing guidance.

Use resources efficiently

We can help with accountability and transparency, board and management status, troubled grants, possible diverted funds, or program/project setup or termination.

Keep up with constantly changing rules and regulations

Our Development & Exempt Organizations (DEO) team has deep knowledge about the unique rules and regulations that apply to tax-exempt entities. We understand that every nonprofit is also a business and help tax-exempt organizations and their for-profit affiliates manage risks, drive compliance, and capitalize on new opportunities, while navigating ever-evolving challenges.

KPMG professionals have the experience to help your team find solutions and mitigate risk.

Your tax-exempt status brings advantages as well as challenges. Regulations continuously change and require increasing oversight. It is critical that you are aware of requirements and address them quickly and accurately to maximize benefits. We can provide guidance on grants and global tax requirements as well as work with funders of charitable programs.

1

Get the full picture on exempt compliance

Tax-exempt entities, including healthcare, education, social service, and public and private foundations, struggle with an ever-changing array of federal, state, local, and international tax-exempt compliance rules. We can help you manage your opportunities, challenges, and risks.

2

Stay on top of grant rules and regulations

Corporate social-responsibility efforts need proper governance and oversight to comply with local tax and regulatory requirements. Our Grant Advisory Services can assist you with program policy and design, risk management, project terminations, and financial grants. Your grants are subject to portfolio assessment, pre- and post-funding review, fund administration, and troubled grants and diverted funds guidelines.

3

Manage your global tax-exempt requirements

Tax-exempt organizations that operate globally, as well as in the U.S., must comply with a broader spectrum of requirements. If you work in healthcare, higher education, development and government, private foundations and nongovernment organizations, or corporate citizenship services, we can help you comply, govern, and manage intellectual property, human resources, cash or other property repatriation, asset disposals, and more.

4

Tax-exempt bonds require extra consideration

If you’ve issued or may issue tax-exempt debt to fund capital expenditures, then you must comply with required private business use (PBU) of debt-financed assets. You can monitor and report ongoing business use with the KPMG PBU Tracker Tool and guidance from our tax-exempt debt specialists. We also review management agreements, lease arrangements, and sponsored-research agreements related to tax-exempt bond financing.

5

Global trading tax compliance

With global trading, you’ll find added requirements and complexity. KPMG can help you calculate taxes and prepare returns, comment on investments for unrelated business income, assist with delinquent returns through the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), obtain penalty abatement, determine tax cost and reporting requirements prior to investment, and look for refund and reclaim opportunities.
