Our planet

How we're driving real, sustainable environmental change.

Businesses have an important role to play in building the necessary resilience to face the climate crisis and continue to grow in a decarbonising economy. Over the years, we have continued to challenge ourselves to reduce the impact we have on the environment. We regularly review our metrics and targets in view of continual improvement, and we are currently re-baselining our near-term Science-based Target. We aim to manage our climate-related risks and opportunities effectively, and, in line with climate science, reduce our negative environmental impact.

Our commitments

We are committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050. We have set a near-term science-based target (SBT) to be achieved by 2030 and this is validated by the Science-Based Target Initiative (SBTi).
We will achieve this by:
Using 100% renewable electricity across our estate by 2024 (this was achieved in 2023).
Switching to renewable gas across our estate by 2030.
100% electric company cars by end of 2030.
Engaging 100+ suppliers to make significant carbon reductions across our supply chain.
Becoming a zero-waste business – eliminating all avoidable waste from our operations by 2030.
Globally, KPMG has committed to understanding and improving our impact on nature.

These commitments form our 1.5 C temperature pathway aligned science-based near -term targets and will be updated once our new targets are verified and validated by the Science-based Target Initiative (SBTi).

Our progress against the commitments above is summarised under each of our strategy pillars: Becoming a net zero business.

Improving our environmental performance

Strong governance and transparent reporting are key to improving our environmental performance. We are committed to meeting, and where possible going beyond, our reporting requirements.

Our stakeholder engagement

From 11-22 November 2024, the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP29) was held in Baku, Azerbaijan. COP29 brought together world leaders, policymakers, industry innovators, and environmental activists to exchange ideas and formulate strategies to tackle climate change.

During the conference, KPMG shared insights on the impacts for businesses of the energy transition, climate finance, carbon capture and corporate decarbonisation to name just a few initiatives. The KPMG delegation of climate professionals on the ground at the conference, fostered collaboration and catalysed discussions that will help to accelerate the climate transformation and lead to a more sustainable future for all. Our COP29 Resource Centre helps businesses better understand their nature- and climate-related risks and learn about cutting-edge sustainable practices and technologies that can increase environmental efficiency.

The conversation continues throughout the year, as we host sessions and bring together inspiring keynote speakers with our colleagues to discuss the environmental issues we’re facing and ways we can all make a difference.

The Net Zero economy is going to bring about an unprecedented demand for ‘green skills.’ We’re working with schools in areas of low social mobility to build students’ ‘sustainability mindset’ and help prepare and excite them for the changing world of work.
