KPMG in the UK helped to optimize skills and career paths through strategic workforce planning for a global pharmaceutical and biotechnology leader

The challenge

To remain competitive and agile amid dynamic market and workplace changes, a global pharmaceutical company recognized that they needed to have a thorough understanding of the skill sets that would be required for their organization in the future.

The opportunity

The primary objective was to proactively address potential skill gaps and ensure that the company’s workforce could meet evolving demands and capabilities.

KPMG in the UK assembled a cross-disciplinary team of human resources, technology and data professionals to develop an AI inference engine for generating skills data for different functions and roles that were then mapped against the skills supply and demand for the company’s R&D, Digital and Technology departments.

The mapping was followed by an opportunity analysis of skills data to identify potential talent mobility, upskilling and recruitment scenarios. That analysis led to the development of an AI ‘Career Companion’ proof of concept chatbot on Microsoft Azure.

The outcome

The AI Career Companion chatbot analyzes and applies skills data to provide personalized career advice and identify upskilling and mobility opportunities for the company’s employees. The KPMG team helped the organization strengthen its workforce agility through large language models to infer skills from 15,000 employees. This allowed the organization to develop the more than 650,000 skills that will be required to meet their evolving business requirements.

The company’s AI Career Companion has generated tailored job descriptions and career pathways that are aligned with the company’s objectives. It has reduced the need for and costs of external recruitment, while also improving employee satisfaction and engagement among the current workforce by helping them to prepare for the organization’s jobs of the future.
